Darwin’s Mistress:
The Story Behind the Name
Darwin’s Mistress was born long before I dared to see her name upon a cloud.
With golden locks and eyes of blue, it’s she who’s been here all along,
right beside me in this changing world.
But one day, with her hair hung loose and spilling down, I pause to thank her for her gentle ways. “Mistress, have I told you how much I appreciate your help?”
“Oh, my dear,” she smiles and says.
“You thank me every time you bend and curve down this road called Life.”
“Oh, you mean,” I pause to look her in the eye. “You mean, every time I a-dapt?”
Then all of a sudden, the world snaps.
Her eyes turn the color of blood. Embers shoot from her hair and fly overhead.
“A-dapt?” she shrieks like a crow.
“Who said anything about adapting?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, my dear mistress. I just thought . . . I mean, with a name like yours,
I thought you were teaching me to evolve.” I hang my head and lower my gaze.
Then she turns and points her finger at me. “Now you get this straight.
I’m not here to help you evolve.”
In the next breath, she hurls something in the air that lands like a cannonball in my hand. But before I can hold it up, she thrashes me with eyes of steel.
“Now, your job isn’t just to survive.
“No, from now on, your job is to THRIVE!”
She yells lighting a fuse that lands directly at my feet.
I open my fist and find a sword, made of pen and ink, pulsing in my hand. And from that moment onward, I sign my name as Darwin’s Mistress
with my pen.
